Ideal Bite Offers Bite-Sized Ideas for Light Green Living

I've just discovered a new website I want to share with you. It's called Ideal Bite. They describe themselves this way: "Ideal Bite offers bite-sized ideas for light green living - ideas for real people who lead busy lives and want to make small changes that add up to big results."

Ideal Bite offers free daily tips with easy things we all can do to save energy, live greener, and save money.

Here are some examples of the green tips you can expect from
Ideal Bite:

Buy one wooden toy for your child in place of an electronic one. "If 10,000 people bought their kids a wooden toy instead of a small electronic one, we'd keep enough batteries to fill an Olympic-size pool out of landfills.
"

"Pitchers or faucet filters cost about $600 over 5 years. Bottled water services or bottles cost nearly $2,000 in that same timeframe!
"

You can sign up for tips geared to moms, for specific cities, or for general green tips. You can also browse the site's tip library, search for tips, and read about recommended green products.

Beware of Mandatory Arbitration

I first learned about this from a consumer radio show, but I thought it was important enough to investigate further. I think everyone's heard about credit card interest rates jumping because of a late payment on a different card or bill--or credit limits being lowered without warning. This is a scary new situation to look out for.

If you have a credit card, you have probably already agreed to binding arbitration with your credit card company without even knowing it. Somewhere in a bill stuffer or in the tiny fine print of your credit card agreement, there is a clause that takes away your day in court should you have a dispute with your bank or get behind in your monthly payments.

Here's why this is a problem--the arbitrators work for the credit card company and rule in their favor as often as 99.8% of the time. That's the figure in California (one state where this information is public). The credit card company can even tack on large attorney's fees and charge you, and they almost always win.

What's even worse is that often these cases are then turned over to the courts, and the arbitration award becomes a judgement. A judgement can mean wage garnishment, a lien on your house, and ruined credit.

I hope you'll check out this recent article from Business Week.

If this makes you angry, please take a moment to call or mail the Minnesota Attorney Generals office where the largest arbitration company is headquartered (the National Arbitration Forum). It's my understanding the State of Minnesota is investigating them and their procedures. The attorney general's office is taking complaints, so if you have been victim of "arbitration" or would like to email a complaint about the process, please contact:

Fun & Free Workshops for Kids at Lowes & Home Depot

Lowes and Home Depot offer free project workshops for kids, and their upcoming workshops feature fun Valentine's Day projects.

Home Depot's workshop is scheduled for
Saturday, February 7th from 9 a.m. to noon at stores nationwide. It's for kids ages 5 to 12. They'll be building a trinket box with a heart on the lid (perfect for Valentine's Day). Each child also receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates' aprons, and an achievement pin. Details are here at Home Depot's website, where you can also find a store locator.

On
February 14th, from 10 - 11 a.m., Lowes is having a workshop where your child can build their own Valentine jewelry box (like the one pictured) or a #48 Lowes race car. You need to sign up on the site here with the number attending and which project your child would like to build.

Remember, these free workshops are held regularly, so check out the websites often and take advantage of the opportunity for your kids to learn some do-it-yourself skills.

My Favorite Deal Today is the SanDisk Sansa e250 2GB MP3/MP4 Player

My favorite deal today is the SanDisk Sansa e250 2GB MP3/MP4 Player for just $29.99. Both of my kids got one for Christmas this past year and it's turned out great.

They wanted ipods, but with this SanDisk MP3 player, you can get something that looks like an ipod without spending much money.

First, I want to let you know it
is refurbished. New, it would be well over $100, but it is selling for $29.99. Even with the shipping, I thought it was a bargain. It stores more than enough music for most people (especially kids), stores photos, and plays video. It also has an FM radio, a voice recorder, and you can record from the radio. There's also a card slot if you'd like to upgrade to more storage.

I researched Sansa and found that next to paying tons of money for an ipod, Sansa was the way to go. This is the video review I found on cnet, a site that, among other things, reviews electronics equipment. Check out this MP3 player for yourself.

You're probably wary of the "refurbished" part, but the product does come with a 30-day warranty from the seller, and
three months parts and labor from Sansa. I can also say that we've had ours since Christmas and have not had any problems.

To see all the features, check it out here: SanDisk Sansa e250 2GB MP3/MP4 Player

If you would like to buy the 4 GB player for $10 more, (which is the same, but holds
twice as much music), it is here: Sandisk Sansa e260 4GB MP3/MP4 Player

You can also find "skins" or covers for them at the Sansa Store if you'd like, but it's not necessary. One of my sons has a cover on his, and that's how we tell the two apart, since both music players are black. (note: if you are really against buying refurbished, you can also get the MP3 player here, along with lots of other Sansa players)

Finally, just a couple of other reasons my kids and I love this MP3 player:

If they lose it, which has already happened twice with my younger son (but yes, we found it both times), we didn't freak out. We would have if it was a $150 ipod.

They like the radio and voice recorder features. Two kids with a voice recorder can have a lot of fun. If you don't believe me, you need to try it.

This is one deal I love--lots more at www.MomsWhoSave.com and on twitter!
