Make the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday a Day of Service

Make the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday a Day of Service
It's just a few days until the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, many of you will have the day off from work, and your children will be home from school.

Instead of staying home and relaxing, I hope everyone will consider using your time to volunteer.

In recent years, more and more people are using this holiday as an opportunity to be of service to others or to attend programs or events honoring Dr. King.

What better way to celebrate the life of this American hero, and if you have children, start a tradition of helping others?

There's a website that can help you find out where to volunteer on Monday. It's MLKDay.gov, and it's very easy to use.

Just enter your zip code on this page to find projects near you. If you don't see any opportunities listed, try any of your local non-profits, or just take your kids to the park and pick up litter, visit a nursing home, or call your local churches or schools and see if they have a need. You can also check your newspaper or local calendar of events for Martin Luther King Day activities.

Whatever you decide, I hope you'll consider not taking the day off, but will use the day to honor Dr. King in some way and pass on to your children the importance of this national holiday and Dr. King's legacy.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -- Make it a Day of Service

Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and many of you will have the day off from work or school. This year, as in the past, people are being encouraged to make this day a day "on" instead of a day "off."

That means using your day away from work or school as a day to serve others in honor of Dr. King and his message. This is an especially great idea if you have children. You can make this a family project.

There is a website that makes this very simple too. You can visit the Martin Luther King Day of Service site, just enter your zip code, and find local volunteer projects happening on Monday. They also have a Facebook page where I found several volunteer organizations listing projects.
