Child-Friendly Ideas for Celebrating Valentine’s Day on a Budget

Child-Friendly Ideas for Celebrating Valentine’s Day on a Budget | MomsWhoSave

If you are searching for child-friendly ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day while also being kind to your wallet, this article is for you! Jennifer Carver of Spaceships and Laser Beams is here sharing wonderful ways to show your children love on this special day while keeping your budget in check.

The most important part of Valentine’s Day is letting loved ones know you care. With a little forethought and creativity, pulling off a memorable celebration of love is totally possible. Here are a few budget-friendly ideas kids will love.

1. Craft homemade Valentines to take to friends, neighbors and loved ones. Raid your stash of craft supplies for card stock, ribbon, glitter, doilies, markers, stickers and other fun embellishments. Pull out stencils and cookie cutters for tracing shapes. If you need some ideas, check out these fun Valentine’s Day card ideas. Your children will love crafting, and it won’t cost you anything out of pocket!

2. Make a visit to your local library and check out a wide variety of Valentine’s Day themed books. Plan a fun night in by hosting a pajama party or read-a-thon with your children. Think blankets, pillows and a fun snack like pink chocolate covered popcorn. Make these bookmarks.

3. Plan a fun excursion to a local park (weather permitting), zoo or children’s museum. During winter, many such establishments have reduced rates or discount tickets available online.

4. Organize a scavenger hunt with clues. Think of places your children frequent and lead them on a wild goose chase as they go from clue to clue until they finally find a small surprise from you for Valentine’s Day. It could be something small from a dollar store. Some ideas include: new coloring books and crayons, candy, balloons, their favorite treat or a small toy.

5. Surprise your children with a pink and red love themed breakfast! It’s amazing what a little red and pink food coloring can do to transform traditional breakfast food. Squeeze a few drops in pancake batter, whipping cream, milk or cupcake mix to add a little flair to their food. They will think it is so much fun! A little effort goes a long way!

6. Prepare a fun afternoon snack of heart shaped sugar cookies and strawberry milk. Whip up your favorite sugar cookie recipe, or buy pre-made cookies. Add frosting and candy embellishments, or save the decorating for the children. Either way, you may just win “parent of the year”.

7. Make a coupon book for each child with coupons they can redeem throughout the year. Some ideas could include:

  • Good for one trip to get ice cream.
  • Good for one extra book at night.
  • Good for a game night.
  • Good for a batch of your favorite cookies.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to break the bank. Most of the ideas shared here focus on using the resources you already have, inserting a little creativity, and giving your time. Your children will love being remembered and cherished, especially on Valentine’s Day!
