This Giveaway has Ended -- Old El Paso Family Taco Night Review and Giveaway

I have another fun giveaway for you! I was given the chance to get some Old El Paso products to review through MyBlogSpark, and I was happy to participate. I should tell you that tacos are one of our family's favorite meals, so there really wasn't much to think about when I was given this opportunity!

I started with chicken breast seasoned with Old El Paso taco seasoning, but I've got one son who likes to make a "taco bowl," which means all of his ingredients go into a bowl--no shells of any kind. My other son and I like the dinner kit's hardshell tacos (but I like black beans and rice in my taco), and my husband likes softshells with his chicken taco. That's the nice thing about taco night--you can let everyone make their own.

If you want to really make it a "theme" night, Old El Paso provides a downloadable game to play called El Tacodor to add some more fun at the dinner table.

However your family likes their tacos, you can win a "family taco night" prize pack which includes a packet of original Old El Paso Taco Seasoning, a cactus chip and dip serving dish, a set of three fiesta chili pepper serving dishes, and a $10 gift card to purchase all of your taco fixings.

And, even if you're not the winner, everyone can click here to print a coupon for 60¢ off their next Old El Paso purchase.

Here's how to enter this giveaway:

Never Wonder What’s for Dinner Again—Huge Discount on Menu Planning Service

Update – deal extended--If you’ve ever thought about a menu planning service—you know the online services that plan your menus, give you recipes, a grocery shopping list, and basically answer the question “What’s for dinner?” for you—then I have a great deal for you.

What's For Dinner?

Menu Planning Central, a popular all-inclusive online menu planning website, is offering the lowest price they’ve ever offered - only $75 for LIFETIME access to their service (normal price is $199.97) That is less than 4 months of the regular monthly rate to get lifetime access. So, for $75 you never have to plan another meal or come up with recipes or shopping lists—unless of course you want to.

I know some of you would consider this a splurge, but I have talked to lots of moms who find that menu planning SAVES money in far fewer trips through the fast food drive thru, fewer take-out orders, and trips to the supermarket that aren’t planned. (I hate to think how much I’ve spent in pizza delivery alone!)

If you’re interested, this is a great deal for a lifetime of menu planning that’s there when you need it—from recipes to shopping lists, and more. I know this service does include desserts and kid-friendly meals too.

I don’t know if this price will be offered again. I do know there won’t be a price close to this low until at least next Black Friday. So grab this if you’re interested -- deal extended--through Monday, November 29th! before noon Central time on Black Friday when it expires!

To learn more, visit Menu Planning Central here. If you decide to order, use the “Click here to start today” link at the bottom of the page. On the following page, you must choose the lifetime subscription, and enter the coupon code: THANKSHOLIDAY or BLKFDY to get the special Black Friday price.

For more great deals, or to search for a bargain on whatever you’re shopping for, check out my homepage at MomsWhoSave.com

You can also join me on Facebook and on Twitter for even more ways to save & for some Black Friday weekend giveaways!

FriXion Erasable Pens Review and Coupon

I was recently offered some FriXion erasable gel pens from Pilot to review. The first thing I thought of was the erasable pens from when I was a kid. Who remembers those?

The ink smudged, and if you did try to erase with them, you mostly just smeared ink across the page. If you tried a little harder to erase, you probably made a hole in your paper.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that this is NOT the case with the new FriXion erasable pens. They write like a regular pen, and when you need to erase, they erase completely with no smudges and no damage to your paper—very cool!

Pilot also makes FriXion erasable highlighters. Again, they’re just like a regular highlighter, but they do erase cleanly—nice!

If you’d like to give them a try, .

Disclosure: I received FriXion pens and highlighters courtesy of SheSpeaks.com for the purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.

This Giveaway has Ended--Get Organized With the Savvycents Wallet – Check it Out & Enter to Win!

Today I’m excited to tell you about a product I’ve been using every day since I got it!

Back at the end of June, I was contacted by regarding their . It was originally created for women who follow the envelope budgeting system you might be familiar with. It also works for anyone (like me) who has a wallet or purse full of receipts, coupons, credit cards, cash, and who knows what else!

Melinda at Savvycents sent me a wallet so I could give it a try. At the time, I honestly had no idea how much space it would save in my purse, or how much better organized it would keep me. Before this wallet, I had a checkbook holder that also held my cash and receipts plus a credit card holder where I wound up putting more receipts. I had an envelope (or two) full of coupons floating around in my purse at all times too. Oops, I almost forgot to mention the loose change. It was really a mess, and it was hard to find what I needed.

With the organization in the Savvycents wallet, I consolidated everything. It’s like I have a little filing system in my wallet with a place for cash, ID, credit cards, receipts, coupons, and more. It even comes with labels in case you need to remind yourself where everything goes. And it has a zippered compartment for change on the outside.

These wallets are also stylish enough to carry on their own, and you can do that, since everything you need is in one place. I’m not kidding when I tell you how much easier it is not to have to dig and dig (and dig) through my purse at a checkout trying to find my debit card or cash. Everything’s in this wallet.

To get your own, visit .

You can also win your own wallet (in your choice of pink or black)!

To enter this giveaway…

1. Visit Savvycents online, and leave a comment below telling me something you learned about Savvycents. Also tell me if you’d prefer the black or pink color if you’re the winner. (This is a required entry.)

DIY Photo Frame Craft Project from Rene Syler – You Will Love It!

Today I want to share a craft project with you. It’s inexpensive to make, the end result looks high-end, and you can make this with your kids. This idea comes from someone you might not automatically think of as frugal or doing craft projects, but you’d be wrong.
rene I’m talking about Rene Syler. You probably know her best from CBS’ The Early Show. Well, she is also an author (Good Enough Mother: The Perfectly Imperfect Book of Parenting), founder of the popular blog Good Enough Mother, an ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, commentator on CNN and other television shows, and most importantly a hands-on mom.
Rene is also an active Facebook user and one of my Facebook friends, and when I saw her post about this craft, I knew I had to share it.
When she was looking for teacher gifts at the end of this school year, she found some photo frames she loved in an expensive boutique. The problem was they were $50 each. Rene couldn’t justify spending that much, so she did what a sensible mom does, and made her own—well, Rene’s kids made them with some help when it came to the hot glue gun. The total amount she spent to make three frames was less than buying just one boutique shop frame.
This is the end result (I’m showing you my favorite one). Rene and her kids actually made three completely different styles of frames. where you can read her .
You’ll notice there’s a note inside the frame. Each child wrote a short letter to their teacher saying “thank you” for everything they’d done for them during the school year. I think that was a thoughtful touch, and I’m sure one that the teachers appreciated.
I only wish Rene’s kids hadn’t gotten out of school so late! My kids have been out for at least ten days, so I missed out on being able to do this project for my kids’ teacher gifts this year. I will keep this in mind for next year though or may-be Christmas.
This would also be a good summertime craft project for a rainy day.
Thanks Rene for allowing me to share this one!

Scholastic's Online Guide Helps You Find the Perfect Summer Camp for Your Child

As we start the summer, I wanted to share a terrific resource with all of you parents. Many of you may be considering sending your kids to camp this year and don't know where to begin your search for the camp that will fit your child's interests, your budget, and of course, be safe, with qualified and caring staff.

Scholastic has an amazing online guide to help you in your search for that ideal summer camp experience--from art camp to music or computer camp to good old-fashioned swimming and hiking, this site is an amazing resource! Click here to check out their guide

You can use search criteria like your child's age, your location, your child's interests, price, and you can even look for special needs camps. (Find these special options under "advanced search.") I have never seen such a comprehensive camp guide!

Even though this website is full of great information, Scholastic Parent & Child magazine also suggests that if possible, you talk to the camp director and/or visit the camp in person before signing up.

If finances are an issue, don't be afraid to ask if scholarships or financial aid is available. If you're considering a day camp, you should check with your employer to see if your dependent care flexible spending account dollars can be spent on the camp fees. Check out fsafeds.com for more information.

Be sure to check out this great search tool as you look for camps this year. You may find some exciting new adventures for your child!

Gardening This Summer? Check Out VeggieTrader.com -- A New Fruit & Veggie Exchange

Depending on where you live, you may be getting ready to plant a vegetable garden. More and more people are growing their own food--either to save money, to avoid pesticides and enjoy fresher produce, or both.

You may also have fruit trees where you live. We were happily surprised to find a pear tree in the backyard of the house we moved into a few years ago. Well, I should say I was. No one else ate pears in our house, and we had a TON of them at the end of the summer!

You might have the same situation with your garden--lots of extra food that you can't eat fast enough. You can freeze or can it, and you can also check out this new website, VeggieTrader.com. It's a free site where people with extra produce can sign up to exchange their fruits and veggies with another gardener who has something they'd like to trade.

This is a new site as I mentioned, so the more people who register, the more successful it will be. The site has lots of information about how it works, how to "make a trade," and a link to help you find out where to donate extra food if you'd rather do that than swap it. You can even find out how to buy and sell your fresh produce.

All of you gardeners may want to bookmark VeggieTrader.com for the end of summer when that big bumper crop comes in!

Easy, DIY Laundry Detergent -- It's Simple to Make, So Inexpensive, & It Works!

I recently took the plunge and tried a frugal experiment I'd been thinking about for awhile. Some of you may want to try this one yourself.

I'm talking about making my own laundry detergent! It was incredibly easy and very inexpensive. I'm wondering now what took me so long to try it.

I used a simple three-ingredient recipe I found online for a powdered detergent. The liquid ones seemed like too much work, but this recipe is as easy as mixing together dry ingredients in any baking recipe. If you can mix flour and sugar, you can do this!

All of my ingredients cost about the same as just one bottle of good quality liquid detergent, but should last for several months, may-be longer. The recipe I used only requires two tablespoons of detergent per large load, since it's so concentrated. By the way, all the ingredients were available at my local grocery store. (I'll give you the recipe below.)

So far, after many loads of laundry, this detergent's doing a great job for me. It smells like "soap" but the clothes come out of the washer with almost no scent.

If you'd like to add scent, you can use dryer sheets or liquid fabric softener. Many people with sensitive skin like this detergent because it is free of artificial dyes and fragrances. And, I should mention my family's clothes are coming out clean--may-be even a little brighter than before.

If you want to save money--and you can save quite a bit--don't be afraid to trying making your own laundry detergent. It is so easy!
_________________________________________

Here's the recipe I'm using--
Mix together:

  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer (or other brand) Washing Soda --not baking soda
  • 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax (note the look of the box has changed since I took this photo)
  • 2 cups (or approximately 1 bar) very finely grated Fels Naptha laundry bar -- some people use Zote brand soap

Use 2 tablespoons for a large load (adjust for smaller or less soiled loads of clothes)
_________________________________________

I found all these products at the end of the laundry area up on the top shelf in the grocery store. They are also available in Walmart. My parents are giving this a try too, and they found these products at Ace Hardware.

Update: I have been using this detergent for over three years, which tells you I'm very pleased with it. I use dryer sheets in the winter to cut down on static cling and to add fragrance. By the way, I cut them in half, and they work just as well.

I hope you'll consider giving this recipe a try. It's so easy to make a part of your routine, and you'll feel great when you get to walk past those expensive laundry detergents.
