What Should You Look for When Choosing a Summer Camp for Your Kids?

Summer's almost here. Are your kids asking about going to summer camp? It can be a wonderful experience for children of all ages. They get out of the house of course and get to meet new friends, enjoy the outdoors, and learn some new skills.

It may also be the first time, or one of the first times, they are away from home. Choosing the right camp is an important decision. How do you know which one is best for your child?

If you do a search online, you'll see there is no shortage of summer camps. Here are a few things you'll want to consider as you sort through them all.

1. Safety: As a parent, safety has to be first and foremost on your mind. So, how do you know that a summer camp will be safe for your child? Here are some questions to ask: Are their staff members background-checked? Do they have first-aid and CPR training? Ask about lifeguards. Is there a nurse or medical professional on staff? What is the procedure in case of a medical emergency? Be sure that you are comfortable with the answers to these questions.

As you do your research, any good summer camp write up will let you know how they'll be keeping your child busy and active. Swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and crafts are common, but if your child has a special interest or talent, look for a camp that offers lessons or instruction in that activity. There are camps for kids interested in drama, art, music, acting, and all kinds of sports. Chateaugay Summer Camp is one camp that offers a large variety of programs beyond swimming and hiking.

3. Cost: Cost shouldn't be your first consideration, but you want to make sure that you are getting a good value for your money. What are the camp facilities like? Is there a well-qualified staff? Are there lots of activities to keep your child busy and learning? If so, you may feel a higher price tag is justified. If not, you won't feel you're getting a good deal.

As you pack up your child to head off to camp, you'll want to make a list of things to bring to camp--and if you're like most parents, prepare to miss your child more than they miss you! They'll most likely be so busy having fun, they won't have much time to think of anything else.
