What Should You Look for When Choosing a Summer Camp for Your Kids?

Summer's almost here. Are your kids asking about going to summer camp? It can be a wonderful experience for children of all ages. They get out of the house of course and get to meet new friends, enjoy the outdoors, and learn some new skills.

It may also be the first time, or one of the first times, they are away from home. Choosing the right camp is an important decision. How do you know which one is best for your child?

If you do a search online, you'll see there is no shortage of summer camps. Here are a few things you'll want to consider as you sort through them all.

1. Safety: As a parent, safety has to be first and foremost on your mind. So, how do you know that a summer camp will be safe for your child? Here are some questions to ask: Are their staff members background-checked? Do they have first-aid and CPR training? Ask about lifeguards. Is there a nurse or medical professional on staff? What is the procedure in case of a medical emergency? Be sure that you are comfortable with the answers to these questions.

What Should You Look for When Choosing a Summer Camp for Your Kids?2. What activities does the camp offer: Your child will be most interested in what activities they'll be participating in at camp. As you do your research, any good summer camp write up will let you know how they'll be keeping your child busy and active. Swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and crafts are common, but if your child has a special interest or talent, look for a camp that offers lessons or instruction in that activity. There are camps for kids interested in drama, art, music, acting, and all kinds of sports. Chateaugay Summer Camp is one camp that offers a large variety of programs beyond swimming and hiking.

3. Cost: Cost shouldn't be your first consideration, but you want to make sure that you are getting a good value for your money. What are the camp facilities like? Is there a well-qualified staff? Are there lots of activities to keep your child busy and learning? If so, you may feel a higher price tag is justified. If not, you won't feel you're getting a good deal.

As you pack up your child to head off to camp, you'll want to make a list of things to bring to camp--and if you're like most parents, prepare to miss your child more than they miss you! They'll most likely be so busy having fun, they won't have much time to think of anything else.

Parents, summer's on its way, and  that means it's time to think about summer camp for the kids. At Mercersburg Academy, its not just camp, it’s a wide range of opportunities for learning, personal growth, and most importantly, fun. Nestled in the mountains of south-central Pennsylvania, the beautiful campus provides the perfect setting for participants to take part in an array of programs, ranging from the Adventure Camp series to various Enrichment, Arts and Sports Camps.

Mercersburg’s adventure camp takes kids ages 6-16 on a wild ride they will talk about for years. Variety is the spice of life, and at Adventure Camp, variety is an understatement. Camp adventures include trips to Hersheypark, white water rafting and a professional sports game. The camp’s unique structure provides just the right balance of enrichment challenges, sports, outdoor adventures, and fun trips to make every session wild, wonderful, and memorable.

Adventure camp is not all that is happening at Mercersburg. The young writers camp allows participants to build writing skills and unleash creativity in a unique environment of like-minded individuals with a passion for writing. This enrichment camp allows for young students to explore the beauty of poetic style and the power of their own voice on paper. Language is at the core of life and Mercersburg campers learn new and liberating ways to express themselves through the written word.

The summer theatre and dance workshops by Mercersburg Summer Programs allow students to improve their preforming arts. A school that has helped to produce two Academy Award winners helps campers to explore and expand their interest in the many elements of theatre in one dynamic week that brings the stage and young people together. Young performers gain skills in improvisation, stage presence, body movement, vocal techniques, character development, ensemble work and problem solving. This unique experience exposes actors to the technical elements of lighting, sound, make-up and costume design.

Mercersburg’s Summer Dance Workshop is a dynamic one-week program that will inspire dancers to learn different movement styles as well as discovering their own. Campers will experience a range of multiple classes from ballet and contemporary to improvisation, yoga and choreography. Expert instruction combined with creative and innovative workshops will insure that dancers will leave Mercersburg’s state of the art Burgin Center with a renewed passion for dance.

On the sport side of summer camps, Mercersburg Swim Clinics are dedicated to improving campers’ technique and helping them to develop as a swimmer both inside and outside of the pool. Mercersburg
Academy’s storied aquatics program has produced over 30 Olympians and brings a tradition of excellence to their summer program. Clinic Director, Pete Williams, has been a part of four Olympic games as a swimmer, coach or official and brings a wealth of knowledge to the program.
